ProSim '99 Workshop:
The call for this year's papers is complete. See
Program Committee '99 for a list of conference organizers. See Program Schedule for a list of this year's presenters. If you are looking for author information for this year, go to the AUTHOR INFORMATION PAGE.

ProSim '00 Workshop:
Tentative date June 25 - 27, 2000

You are invited to participate in next year's Software Process Simulation Modeling Workshop (ProSim'00). The goal of the workshop is to bring together academics and practitioners interested in the area of software process simulation modeling and metrics. ProSim is an international forum for presenting current research themes and applications, to discuss various approaches and to discover underlying similarities.

Workshop Theme and Topics of Interest:

Software companies are faced with constant changes and increased demands for improvements to cycle time, costs, and quality. Software Process Simulation has shown to be an effective tool to evaluate changes made to a software project or development organization and to help manage these changes. The Silver Falls Workshop on Software Process Simulation Modeling (ProSim) brings together academics and industry in order to jointly explore the benefits of, and issues involved in, Software Process Simulation. The focus of this workshop is on both the application of software process simulation research in addressing real-world problems, as well as advances being made which will provide the foundation for Software Process Simulation modeling in the future.

We invite research papers, experience reports, tutorials, and panel presentations in all areas related to software process modeling and simulation (including discrete event, System Dynamics, knowledge-based systems, State-based modeling, petri-nets, and other approaches. Preference is given to quantitative methods). An initial set of topics have been identified and include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Advances in software process simulation modeling methods and theory
  • Applications of software process simulation modeling approaches in industry
  • Metrics and model integration
  • Practical benefits of modeling and simulation
  • Approaches/environments for supporting the integration of process representation, guidance, simulation, and execution capabilities for models of software processes
  • Improved approaches for validation and calibration of simulation models with limited real-world data
  • Comparisons of alternative simulation approaches
  • Techniques for combining simulation modeling approaches (i.e. hybrid simulation models)
  • Improvements in techniques for critical path determination, probability of meeting targets, resource allocations using stochastic models
  • Generalized and adaptable process simulation models. Feasibility of validating standard “plug and play” model components, process patterns or process archetypes.

Information for Authors:

Authors are requested to submit a 2-3 page extended abstract, tutorial, or panel proposal to the workshop. Abstracts will be reviewed and authors of accepted works will be asked to provide a full paper to the workshop (8-10 pages). Workshop papers will be then reviewed by a panel of researchers and practitioners to select papers for inclusion in a special issue of Journal of Systems and Software

Deadlines:

February 25, 2000 -- 2-3 page (1,000 to 1,500 words) extended abstracts due
March 15, 2000 -- notification of acceptance for the workshop
May 21, 2000 -- Final full papers due (approximately 5,000 words)
August 1, 2000 -- “Best Papers” selected for inclusion in special issue of JSS
October 1, 2000 -- Revised versions of papers due for inclusion in special issue of JSS

Please send extended abstracts via email (in ASCII or MS Word readable attachment) or hard copy by February 25, 2000 to:

Workshop Location:

ProSim'00 will be held at the Silver Falls Conference Center in Silver Falls, Oregon on June 25 through June 27, 2000. The conference center is located 45 miles southeast of Portland and is inside one of Oregon's picturesque state parks. The Convention Center itself is situated in a secluded meadow and is within walking distance of Silver Creek Canyon which has a seven mile hiking trail providing access to ten spectacular waterfalls. We anticipate a true workshop atmosphere where participants will be able to discuss topics and ideas in depth in this lovely and secluded natural setting. Participation in the workshop will be limited to approximately 50 people. Past attendance has been comprised of approximately 60% academics and 40% professionals from industry.
